What is the Distance from Thamel to Patan?

The road distance from Thamel (Kathmandu) to Patan Dhoka (Lalitpur) is about 6 km.
Walking is possible, in about 1.5–2 hours but it’s not recommended due to Kathmandu’s chaotic sidewalks, traffic, and air quality.

For a quick and comfortable journey, take a taxi (cost: NPR 300–500 / about US$ 4), which takes 25–40 minutes through Kathmandu’s vibrant streets. Along the way, you’ll cross the holy Bagmati River and pass local bazaars, leading you to Patan Dhoka, Patan’s ancient northern gate—a perfect start to explore its UNESCO-listed heritage.

Tell your taxi driver: “Patan Dhoka, Kwakhu tira jada” (“Take me to Patan Dhoka near Kwakhu”). This avoids confusion with other Patan gates.

Private transportation is optional in this tour: after choosing a date you can select the option for a Private Tour including pick up by the guide and a separate dedicated driver with a private vehicle.
