Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is roughly 5–6 km from central Thamel, depending on where your hotel is located. In light traffic this usually takes 15–25 minutes by taxi or private car; at rush hour it can be slower because of congestion around the airport junctions and city centre.

The airport lies to the east of the city, while Thamel sits closer to the old centre of Kathmandu. Most routes go via the Ring Road and into the city, then weave through the downtown streets into Thamel.

Best ways to get from Kathmandu Airport to Thamel

There are several ways to travel from the airport to Thamel. Which option works best for you depends on your budget, arrival time and how comfortable you are with local transport.

1. Pre‑booked airport transfer (most comfortable)

The easiest option after a long flight is to arrange a pre‑booked airport pickup. Your driver waits for you in the arrivals hall with a sign, helps with luggage and takes you directly to your hotel in Thamel.

• At night, drivers may ask more; it is normal to negotiate or use an official counter if available.

When possible, agree the price before you get into the taxi, or ask the driver to use the meter. 3. Taxi via local ride‑hailing apps

Travellers on a tight budget can take a public bus from near Kathmandu airport towards the city centre. Buses typically run between the airport area (Sinamangal) and Ratna Park, from where you can walk or take a short taxi into Thamel.

• Very cheap – usually only a small amount in Nepalese Rupees per person.
• Expect basic, crowded buses and limited luggage space.
• Not recommended if you arrive late at night, with heavy luggage, or on your first ever visit to Nepal.

To use the bus, you usually walk out of the airport area to the main road and ask for the bus to Ratna Park. From Ratna Park it is about 15–20 minutes’ walk to central Thamel, or a short taxi ride.

5. Walking from Kathmandu Airport to Thamel

The distance from the airport to Thamel may look walkable on the map, but in practice few visitors walk the whole way. The roads are busy, there are uneven pavements and you will be carrying luggage while dealing with dust and traffic.

• The walk can easily take over an hour, depending on your pace and route.
• Not recommended after dark or if you are new to Kathmandu’s traffic.
• Better to walk shorter stretches in the daytime once you know the area a little.

Which option is best for you?

For most first‑time visitors, a pre‑booked transfer or regular taxi is the most relaxed way to reach Thamel from Kathmandu airport. Budget travellers with light bags might choose the bus, while experienced visitors sometimes combine a short taxi ride with a walk, especially during the day.
